- KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
Success is a journey that demands you have a clear understanding of what it is you want. Most people want to be successful but many have no idea
what it is they expect to achieve. You need to be clear about what success means for you. What do you want? What does it look like?
How will you know when you’ve achieved it? These are questions that will help you get a clearer picture of what you want. The goal must be crystal
clear to you. I often ask my clients to even describe the emotions they expect to feel when they achieve this goal.
- DETERMINE WHAT IT’LL TAKE TO ACHIEVE IT
One of the most challenging aspects about chasing a goal or dream is the realization that it’s tougher than one anticipated.
This has been a constant with most of my clients. Once you determine what it is you want, start thinking about what it’ll take to achieve it.
I am not referring to resources at this point. What you need to do is prepare yourself psychologically for the journey you’re about to take.
Success requires a shift in how you think, your perspective on life and how you deal with pain, disappointment and betrayal. The lack of emotional
readiness, for example, often proves to be the biggest stumbling block. You will need to overcome your fear of failure.
You’ll need to get over your constant need for validation. You have to find ways to deal with your anxiety and/or procrastination.
You will definitely be put to the test. If succeeding was easy, everyone would be successful at everything!
It’ll take a lot from you, emotionally and psychologically, to navigate the journey ahead. Are you up to the challenge?
- MEASURE YOUR PERFORMANCE
As you put in all your energy and focus into achieving your goal, you’ll need to be able to measure the effectiveness of your actions.
Being busy doesn’t mean you’ve been effective. Many people fail to account to themselves, and this affects their ability to remain committed
and honest to the course. This is why making excuses seems the better option to many. See, in life you get to keep all the excuses you fight for.
- BE FLEXIBLE
If what you have been doing isn’t bringing you the desired results it’s best to re-evaluate and change it. Be flexible and adapt to changes,
adapt to new challenges and do so without losing any of your discipline and enthusiasm. The more flexible we are, the more we can adjust
and operate at our best in any given situation. We call this the Law of Requisite Variety.
- BE DISCIPLINED
Discipline trumps motivation on any given day! Sure, motivation together with inspiration will help when starting out but to see things through,
to be able to navigate procrastination, disappointment, failure and betrayal you need to showcase discipline. Discipline keeps you committed and
helps you move closer to your goal even on days you don’t feel like it. Prioritize that which you want to succeed at and
learn to say NO to anything that will delay or distract you.
